
Irish Archaeology Field School 2012

We are Irelands leading provider of university accredited, site based archaeological research and training. The ethos of the school is to provide an opportunity for students and enthusiasts of archaeology and anthropology to experience at first hand the excitement of archaeological excavation within an established research framework. Excavations are undertaken in a research environment led by a team of highly qualified and experienced archaeologists using the most sophisticated technologies, including GPS topographical survey, geophysics, photo-planning and more.

Excavation and recording techniques – how to excavate?
First Aid for Finds and the recording of archaeological samples – what to do with materials from the ground?
On site seminars on the study of animal bone and plant remains and other materials as they are found from experts in their respective fields.
Integrating the results into previous years research
You will also have the opportunity to take part in small focus groups including:
Post-excavation processing, recording and analysis of finds and samples;Archaeological Field Survey of new potential archaeological and historical sites within the Boyne Valley using modern equipment such as GPS, Total Station;
Architectural Heritage Survey of historic buildings
Geophysical Survey of potential sub-surface sites, including data analysis and interpretation;
The programme will include a number of expert led tours of famous sites such as the Trim Castle, The Boyne Valley Heritage Centre, Mellifont Abbey, Tara, and a host of hidden gems.
