An Introduction to Archaeology, Cyprus

This is the first season of a new course designed to provide an Intorduction to archaeology using Prehistoric Cyprus as a case study.  Participants will learn the fundamentals of the study of archaeology and the techniques involved in recording archaeological sites.  All of this will be carried out in an idyllic Mediterranean setting with tours to local Prehistoric sites organised every day.

We can provide self-catering accommodation at beautifully located sea front apartments offering 3* accommodation. The apartments include a shared pool and are only a hundred yards away from a lovely sandy beach. Breakfast is included in the cost of accommodation. The apartments are located just 500m from the centre of Lemba, where the archaeology course is being held, and are within a row of amenities including a pub, restaurants and mini-market. There is also a bus service that operates frequently into both Paphos and the nearby resort town of Coral Bay. Apartments are available for both single rooms and double rooms. Costs for the course (which includes all transport for tours, lunches and a Friday evening BBQ) and self-catering accommodation for 6 nights (which includes breakfast) are as follows: • Single person - £400 • Two people sharing a Double room - £670 Camping accommodation can be provided at the Lemba Archaeological Research Centre (LARC). The centre is located in the middle of the village of Lemba, next door to the recently opened Cafe Neo (coffee shop) and the Lemba Pottery shop. LARC is where the course will be held. Facilities include a toilet and shower block with hot running water and a kitchen for preparing meals. The centre is a short five-minute stroll away from a large supermarket and take-away establishments. It is also only 500m from the local sandy beach and coastal road, which has bars, restaurants and mini-markets. Camping will be provided on land behind the centre, or on the flat roof of the building beneath the trailing grape vines. Mattresses will be provided and tents can be provided for a fee on request. Costs for the course (which includes all transport for tours, lunches and a friday evening BBQ) and camping accommodation for 6 nights are as follows: £260 per person

Course location is a short walk from accommodation. Tours within the village will be on foot, transportation will be provided on all other tours. Airport transfers on arrival and departure can be arranged on request.

Horaire:

HARP will be running an Introduction to Archaeology course based near Paphos, Cyprus in Spring 2012. The course will take place in the idyllic village of Lemba, located approximately 6km from the historic centre of Paphos. The village has a rich and varied history and has beautiful views west over the Mediterranean, the perfect place to enjoy a sunset! The course will run over 5 days from Mon 26th to Fri 30th March or Mon 2nd to Fri 6th April and aims to provide an introduction to archaeology as a whole, using Cyprus as a case study. The course will include: • Introductory seminars on the study of archaeology • Seminars and lectures on the prehistory of Cyprus, from the Neolithic up until the Roman period • The opportunity to study artefacts uncovered from local excavations • Lessons in how to draw and record archaeological sites and artefacts • Archaeological photography • Tours every afternoon to prehistoric sites in the region from the Neolithic to the Broze Age, including a trip to the World Heritage site of the Tombs of the Kings, and the Paphos museum Every participant will receive a course book to build and develop their skills over the course of the week. Lunches will be provided each day and we'll wind up the course with a traditional BBQ on the Friday evening.

Formation archéologique offerte

Seminars and lectures are intended to provide introductions to archaeology and the prehistory of Cyprus. Practical training will be provided on photography, artefact processing, site drawing including plans and section drawing, and basic building recording. This training will be provided to professional standards as indicated by the Institute for Archaeologists.

No Previous experience required. Participants will need to bring sturdy footwear, sunscreen, hat, torch/flashlight (if camping). No Vaccinations required. Participants must arrange own travel and health insurance. No work permits required. Check visa requirements with local embassy.
